STATEMENT CONCERNING THE ANNABELLE LAWSUIT

On Friday March 29, 2014, Evergreen Media Group, producers of the recent horror film, The Conjuring, formally filed a Federal law- suit against Warner Brothers and New Line Cinema for copyright violation and the illegal expropriation of lite- rary property, among other charges. Central to that complaint involves the story of a possessed doll named Annabelle, which appeared in the Conjuring film, and is now being proposed as a follow-up picture to now be called “Annabelle” by the same two motion picture companies.
In response to the many enquiries on this subject, the answer is Yes, the Annabelle figure is indeed based on the same Annabelle story that was first published in The Demonologist, as is related in chapter three of the book. At issue is the fact that Warner Brothers and New Line Cinema acted without permission of the author, nor did it provide compensation or recognition to same for the utilization of literary material from which it has realized considerable profit.
Evergreen Media currently holds the option rights to The Demonologist and is therefore acting in defense of this literary property, in addition to the other grievances it has brought forth before the court.
